There are many different reasons why a dog might bite you. Puppies love to play fight, and they love to nibble their owners, but sometimes this playfulness can go too far and they might bite you without realizing it. Some dogs haven’t been well socialized with humans and they might be very aggressive when you try to reach out to them, which could result in them lashing out.

But no matter how or why you were bitten, there are some steps you need to take in this situation to make sure you don’t end up with any lasting scars or injuries. Here are some things you need to do if a dog does bite you.

Take Preventative Measures

Of course, whenever necessary, you should always take some preventative measures to ensure that you are never bitten. The best thing you can do is to train your dog or puppy so that it respects all other humans and animals, and so it can develop a very friendly and peaceful nature. It’s also worth getting some vaccinations, such as ones that can fight rabies and typhoid, so that you don’t develop any serious health conditions as a result of a dog bite.

Stop Any Bleeding

So, you’ve been bitten. First of all, you need to stop the flow of blood immediately. You can do this by applying pressure to the affected area and wrapping a bandage around it. If you don’t have a bandage handy, you could wrap a tea towel around it. Just make sure the towel is clean!

Consider Legal Help

Everyone has a legal responsibility for ensuring that their dog is safe and good around other humans and pets. If you are ever bitten by anyone else’s dog, then you could be well within your rights to sue and take them to court. It’s worth speaking to a personal injury lawyer, such as DeSalvo Law, and they will help you work out whether you have grounds for a case. If possible, you should find some witnesses who saw the dog attack as these will be able to give evidence in court to strengthen your case.

See Your Doctor

It’s also really important that you see your doctor after you have been bitten by a dog. If you haven’t already been vaccinated against certain diseases that can be transmitted through dog bites – as previously mentioned – then your doctor will be able to give you the necessary medications and treatments. They can also disinfect your wound so that there is no chance of it getting infected. If it looks like you need further attention, such as surgery, then your doctor will be able to refer you to an operation with a surgeon.

Getting bitten by a dog can be very scary, especially if it was a completely unprovoked attack. But as long as you follow all of these steps above, then you will be able to get all the help you need, and you won’t have to worry about too many lasting effects!
