DIY – Fairy Tree House

DIY – Fairy Tree House

When I was younger, I had vivid imaginations of fairy kingdoms.  I could see them come to life just by closing my eyes and dreaming of them.  I still remember when my mom used to buy me books to read about fairies.  I also had a lunch box that I decorated with fairy stickers and a table covered with fairy drawings. Maybe it was during this time that I started to believe that my hopes and dreams could come true.

I love the idea that fairies can fly and I was fascinated with how it would feel like to soar in the sky.  This brings me back to an idea that came to me as I was cleaning out my kitchen and found an empty mason jar. I thought it would be fun to create a new project of a fairy treehouse.  I have seen countless treehouses made of mason jars and wanted to create something that was unique and meaningful to me.

Tree House

To create the effect of a fairy treehouse, I made a twisting and melting style hut on the lid and included a hanging heart at the tip of the point. Here’s a photo tutorial of the steps I did below:

I was really excited about this project, but I knew that I had to be careful to make the details look realistic.  I made three windows to give the appearance that I could peek through the glass to see what was inside.  I used different colors of polymer clay to form the house and baked with the instructions on the package at 275 °F (130 °C for 30 mins.).  Once the polymer cooled down, I polished them with Varathane Polyurethane – a fast drying gloss to add shine. I spent less than $10 for the entire project!

Here is the end result below:

I plan to make more treehouses in different colors with gardens full of flowers, gnomes, and fairies.  I also want to experiment by adding a battery operated tea light inside the jar…imagine what it would look like as it glows in the dark!

This a great gift idea for your family and friends. You can also start a business by selling treehouses online with custom colors and designs. Start saving your empty mason jars to create your own version of this project.
