Time Considerations for Revision Rhinoplasty

Before you can get a revision rhinoplasty procedure, the swelling from your last procedure has to be completely gone. It’s uncommon for revision rhinoplasty to be performed within the first year following rhinoplasty. It can take up to one year for the nose to completely heal from rhinoplasty, and it wouldn’t be safe or smart to have another nose job performed during that time. You also won’t be able to see the final, accurate results of the procedure until it’s completely healed.

The Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure

Based on how complex the revision rhinoplasty procedure is, it can take up to several hours until it’s complete. You’ll be under twilight sedation, which means you’ll be unconscious but still able to breathe without any assistance. It’s also possible that your surgeon will suggest a general anesthetic.

The incisions may be in just the interior of the nose, which is called closed rhinoplasty, or also beneath the tip of the nose, which is called open rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty is sometimes preferred by surgeons because it allows them to accurately see and change the nose’s structures.

After the surgeon makes the incisions, the skin will be lifted, allowing the surgeon to reposition the cartilage and change, shave or replace the nasal structures. Once the procedure is finished, the skin will be put back in place and the incision will be closed.

Recovering from Revision Rhinoplasty

Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication that will help you through the recovery process. After one week, the doctor will remove your stitches. It’s common for bruising to occur, but it should be gone within 10 days from the procedure. The swelling can last up to one year, though, and you won’t be able to see the final outcome of the rhinoplasty until the swelling is completely gone.

After about one week, you may feel comfortable enough to go back to work. However, avoid strenuous activities, like exercise, for three weeks. You also have to be extra careful to not bump your nose into anything and to keep it protected from sun exposure for two months.
